¿Donde?

So. The Thriller and I — against our better judgment because we have a ton of home improvement projects to finance — need to get away this summer. Since we’re all up in the air regarding a trip to Europe (tentatively scheduled for next summer, but…), we’d like to take a one-week road trip someplace, but we can’t figure out where.

Originally, we thought about Mackinac Island. You know, stay in the Grand Hotel, see the beautiful grounds. But then…meh. I dunno.

We briefly talked about Yosemite, because strangely enough, on both of our western US odysseys, we never went there. We just weren’t in the right place at the right time, so we couldn’t squeeze it in. And of course, if we go west to northern California, we would stop in and see Kay & Bob. But we’re still not sure how the summer’s going to shake out.

So tell me: where would you go if you could take a road trip right now? What’s interesting to see? We’ve been to the 48 contiguous, but certainly haven’t seen anything approaching “everything.”

We’re not beach people, although we love to visit beachy areas where there’s other stuff to do.

Any suggestions? We’re open. And have I told you we’re down to nine (9) school days left?

:-D

Well, apart from visiting your pal in AZ you mean.
Two areas come to mind: I am partial to the Dolores River area on the Western slope of the San Juan’s. Many fun places to see from Dolores to Durango to Ouray and Telluride all easy day trips. The other area I never tire of seeing are the Tetons.
But if you only have a week then you already know my choice….:)

Hiya!! Well since my heart is in Michigan……have you ever driven the west coast of Michigan along Lake Michigan? It’s beautiful if you stick to the roads that go along the lake. That would take some map reading or good GPS directions but no problem for you I think!

Since H and I love Chicago we think everyone should too so……..and I know you are driving fools like we are….on a Friday drive to Chicago and spend 2 nights. Head out in the direction of Michigan and go up to Holland MI for a night. Look at the windmill there. Next day drive to Traverse City by way of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. You could check the summer concert schedule at Interlochen and maybe see something nice there. Spend a night in Traverse City or drive a bit to Charlevoix or Petosky. All beautiful beach side towns. Then head to Mackinaw City/Mackinac Island. Staying on the Island is expensive but Mac City has nice hotels and the boat ride to the Island is short and fun. Do the Mackinac Island “thing”–horse and carriage ride or *gasp* rent bicycles and RIDE around the island. Buy lots of homemade fudge. Go back to the mainland and get pasties for dinner. Head back south to Detroit and spend the night. And……done!!

    Just a suggestion. :)

Couldn’t have said it better myself. We also love to do lunch at the Grand. There was recently a really good Groupon deal for one of the island Inns. I also recommend the carriage tour!

Not sure if you and Michael are “fliers” but have you considered an Alaskan cruise? It’s not exactly “T-shirt and shorts” but the scenery is beautiful and the ports of call are interesting. Summer would be the time to go and there are week-long cruises available and deals are to be found right now at pretty reasonable prices. Cruises are mostly all-inclusive: lodging, food, entertainment and some enrichment (not always the best and not always well-prepared lectures). Alaskan cruises depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, BC.

These are all fantastic ideas! Thanks for your input as always — and look at the diversity here. From luxury cruises in Alaska, to the Great Lakes area and the Southwest, to an outhouse in Last Stop, California. ;-)

We’re still undecided — it’s unfortunately all about the cash this time around. Too many home projects to fund. We’re still hopeful, though. I’ll keep you posted!
