How I Spent My Saturday III

Until yesterday, I had never been inside a semi truck. You know, the kind with the 7-foot cab ceiling and the little walkspace and the bed in the back, and a refrigerator and TV & stuff.

Well, #1 Son had to get his truck ready to go. He leaves tonight for his first-ever solo haul, and Mama Fink is proud. He needed some prep work done on what will be his full-time office and part-time home from here on out, so he and I — along with Jake — went to the truck yard to get it all ready to fly.

Here is the beast

Our little hard worker - gone in sixty seconds

Then, there was some school work done. Then, this. You don’t say. :-)

Today, I’m having coffee with a friend from high school. Brad (the guy on the left) was my lab partner in chemistry class, and we were in other school functions together. He is now a managing director for the company named in the photo.

It’ll be great to catch up. And since he’s on my Facebook friend list, I can leave the 10-lb. Jake/Justin photo album at home. Always a good thing.

Happy Sunday, fiends. Your Fink hearts you.

I gotta tell ya….I would love it. The open road, just me & the tunes…I’m sure it’s not all that glamorous, and there is the definite downside of being away from home a lot, but there is independence, freedom, and good money to be made. And the training (schooling) is only 10 weeks long.

I’d do it in a heartbeat. In fact, Seamus is taking me along on one of his shorter runs sometime in the future. Cannot wait – TruckFink!

What an interesting job he has too, David. Wow. He said that his division was one of the few untouched by all this craziness of late.

When I used to drive from MI to CA I had a CB in my car (I was Pink Flamingo). I talked with a couple that drove toether as a team. They’d drive and drive for a couple of months and earn enough to take 6 months off. I always thought that would be cool.

Good luck to Seamus, he’s gonna be an awesome hauler!

Six months off…what I couldn’t do with THAT! Thanks for the good wishes, Suz. He’s nervous, but really looking forward to getting started on his own.

I watched that Browns game. They looked good, but to be honest they should look good against a team that went 0-16 last season.

Yeah, but the Lions beat Atlanta last week, so they came in one better than the Browns! Avoiding stupid penalties helped, too. Not that they’re going to continue that good fortune, mind…

I’ve sometimes longed to drive a big rig. I love to drive and to see a lot of country. Can you imagine me at the wheel of one of these rigs? :-) Doubt that it will every happen, so everyone can breathe a sigh of relief. I look forward to hearing some stories from your #1 son. Can your friend David help me generate a lot of income for my retirement?

      Hey old fiend…

Doesn’t it sound like fun, though? Perhaps in another life.

And if you mean Brad — I’m sure he’d be happy to assist you in your quest for retirement glory. If you mean David…well, he’s just a pup at AU. HA

      Java. Soon. You. Me. Aloha.

Do you think #1 son’s travels will bring him down to the Big D? If so, I hope he has a chance to give me a shout! I’ve never been in one of those big rigs & I have ALWAYS wanted to ride shotgun (even if it’s only a lap around the metroplex). I used to have a CB in my car during those summers of being on the BYC Summer Intern Music Teams. My handle was “Wet Willy” (don’t ask… please…).

    2 days… (drumroll, please)!! :-)

Wet Willy….HAAAA. Ah yes, the summer music teams! I’d totally forgotten about those, wow.

I will ask #1 if he ever gets to Tejas. He’s contacted me several times from Alabama, but I seem to remember him saying that his company’s routes rarely go west of the Mississippi. But if he ever stops in Dallas, you know he’ll look you up!

Two days…um, till what? Oh, I know – the first day of school!
      :P
