Monthly Archives: June 2014

IBFD

The sixth of June is famous (and infamous) for three reasons, among others:

  1. Today, we commemorate D-Day, when Allied Forces invaded the shores of Normandy in northern France 70 years ago, in what is remembered as a battle won, but at a horrifying cost. Still, it’s hard to calculate the span of Nazi Germany’s (and Russia’s) eventual stronghold in Europe had they not mounted the attack.
  2. Today is the birthday of our most awesome RtB fiend, BoomR. :-D
  3. Today is  International Beatles Fan Day! Now I can get behind that, Jim.

From the Fan Day site:

In June 1967, the first global satellite television show, Our World, was broadcast. Nineteen nations were invited to contribute to the show, and the Beatles appeared representing the UK. On that day, 400 million people in 31 countries all around the world listened to “All You Need Is Love” for the first time.

John Lennon wrote the song under the directive from the BBC that it contain a message that everyone around the world could understand. They picked the right band, that’s for sure. And with 1967 being the “Summer of Love,” the message couldn’t have been more culturally appropriate or important. (He did, however, wait until the very last minute to say, “Oh, [the broadcast is] coming up that soon? I guess we’d better write something.”)

The Fabs weren’t the only ones in the studio for the event; it was quite crowded with friends and fellow musicians (Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Keith Moon, Graham Nash and others). No politicians or heads of state were allowed to participate. I like that part.

Love is all you need. Yep. Put a flower in your hair and celebrate today.

Happy birthday, BoomR! :-D

Cue Alice Cooper.

Happy, happy. Another school year in the books. And you know what my first thought was? I need to plan out my summer to get as much work done as possible. I should be either stoked or filled with dread. I think I feel a little of both.

I did the ceremonial canceling of the alarm last night before I hit the hay, around 11:00. Slept in till 5:30. Score.

Tonight, we take our sweet Remy to a dog trainer for evaluation. She told the Thriller that it’s more than likely going to just take a metric ton of patience to help him get over his all-consuming fear of absolutely everything (people, other animals, strange noises, thunder, someone dropping a fork on the floor, the occasional raised voice, mirrors, Frisbees, the sidewalk, cars, the Thriller’s recliner, etc.). She will also evaluate the benefits of any possible training exercises. We tried that once, and it was a dismal failure because Remy was so scared of the teacher, he just collapsed on the floor and wouldn’t move.

Strangely though, he’s totally fine with Dusty and Oliver, Seamus’s dogs. No fear at all. While he’s definitely a “follower,” he doesn’t run and hide from them, or stand and bark wildly at them, which he does with every other animal he encounters. Good thing, too, as we’re hosting the dynamic doggie duo for a week in July. I think that’ll be really good for Remy, actually.

I tend to get impatient, which is dead wrong. We’ve had him for only five months; I can’t expect him to change two years’ worth of ingrained behaviors in that short a time span. I sure would like to know who — at the very least — threw him in a cage and left him there, with obviously no human touch or animal interaction. Truly, it broke my heart when this trainer told us that it sounds like he has absolutely no self-esteem. He thinks he’s worthless.

On the contrary, we think he’s fantastic, which makes us all the more sad that he’s struggling so much with life in general. He has nothing but love all around him; he deserves to enjoy it. But Mama Fink needs to be more patient.

At least I have time for patience now. :-D

Greetings and showing off

Fiends! It’s been a while, I know. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like that. Good news: Three more days. Three till I’m free. Then you will hear from me, Jimmy. Don’t you doubt it.

You know, it’s always a big deal when your kid reaches a milestone. But believe me, it’s a bigger deal when your grandchild reaches one. The Thriller and I sat, mouths agape, last night and listened to Jake, our recent kindergarten graduate, sight-read a book like it was his job. He hadn’t seen this book since I read it to him, probably a year or two ago. And yes, he nailed it. And yes, I recorded the event for posterity. And yes, I am posting it here. :-D

If you’ve a mind to, humor a doting Grammie and give it a looksee. You’ll be glad you did, as you’ll know more about bees than you did two minutes ago.

Hope you’re having a fantastic weekend. I plan to keep this place from getting so cobwebby in the future.
