Five things

Dare ya to do it. Five things we don’t know about you. Five opinions that might shock, entertain, delight, enlighten, or evoke feelings of utter ambivalence. Five items that are either personal or professional, good or not so good, silly or sublime, prideful or shameful.

Short lists reveal a lot, I think. Behold:

  1. Although I think I might have mentioned this someplace before, I believe I am the only high school choir director in the United States who has never seen a single episode of “Glee.”
  2. There are very few things I truly hate, but #1 on that short list is mean, inconsiderate people. (Passive-aggressives rank a close second, and Pharisees are up near the top as well.)
  3. I believe that spankings do have an occasional place in the discipline framework of parenting. (If you want to open a protracted discussion on this, I’m game.)
  4. I think people who say, “I don’t care what anyone thinks,” are likely hiding some issues that would indicate otherwise. If you don’t care what anyone thinks, you really shouldn’t have to say so. You just do what you do. It’s like telling the kids on the playground, “I’m really going home now! I mean it!” after not getting your way.
  5. I really, really, really, really hate choir warmups. You know, the scales, the solfege, the chorales. I am going to do some experiments this fall with minimizing them.

OK, go. Regular Finkville citizens know I run this blog just as much for interaction and discourse as for blathering on about me, me, me (although I do enjoy that tasty morsel), so you know what to do. Your username and email are probably auto-saved in your browser. I also know there are readers who hide in the shadows, or who only comment once in a great while. Let’s hear from you, too.

Is it Sunday already? Could it possibly mean that in six days, we will be on the road towards the Odyssey? And me without a single plan for what to pack…

    1. I am at a stage in my life where I would rather stay home and read books. I am tired of “drama” and trying to make everyone happy. It does not work.
    2. I am not true to myself.
    3. I question the validity of the Bible.
    4. I despise state testing. I vehemently believe “teaching to the test” is a worthless skill that students soon forget. It stifles creativity and the desire to learn.
    5. I am not a fan of the praying mantis.

    1. I believe there is wrong and right way to hang a toilet paper roll.
    2. If you finish the toilet paper GET A NEW ONE, please.
    3. Chapstick. I feel naked without it. (I think you already know this)
    4. I tend to “water-down” what I drink. I usually dilute my drinks with the exception of soda. I don’t like the strong taste of orange juice, lemonade, eggnog (I put milk in it), gatorade, iced tea, etc. I put more water in it. Weird.
    5. I prefer to eat just about any dessert BEFORE it’s baked. Cookie dough, cake batter, etc.

    1. I have not seen a single episode of Glee either….
    2. I despise reality TV shows & contest shows like Idol, except for 1: (and I watch it without fail-don’t laugh): Millionaire Matchmaker on Bravo (side note-ran into millionaire bachelor Jimmy D in Las Vegas airport last week FLYING COACH & boarding with Group 3 on a flight to Chicago – what’s up with that??)
    3. After approx. 14 years of tension and semi-estrangement at times, my relationship with my parents is finally back to “normal” (or as normal as things can get with me LOL). :-)
    4. I **LOATHE** the hypocrisy of public figures, elected officials, and religious leaders when they say one thing or promote causes that tear down factions of our society… only to learn that they are secretly part of that group against which they are fighting so hard.
    5. I’m a pin-up boy in a calendar (Mr. June 2006) that was done as a fundraiser for a local Dallas charity. The calendar producers thought they’d be lucky to sell out of the initial print run, only to discover that they had to reprint the calendar 3 times!

Yep! I’v been following your blog for quite some time actually. I ussually don’t comment because my thoughts and opinions have pretty much been said by someone else. So I stay in the dark. Ha!

Oh, and I will keep the name in mind for next time, I’ll change it up a bit!

    1) I came out not because I felt I needed to but mostly because it was the lazy thing to do.
    2) I have no problem with my personal living space being a mess but nothing gets me angered more than the kitchen and living room being left in shambles.
    3) When I need to blow off steam, I throw on my iPod and clean and god save anyone who asks if I want to talk about it.

No, thank goodness. I’ve grown fond of the musical since then but it would so not work good as a film.

    1. My dad is a preacher, and I am directly descended from lots of preachers, but think organized Christianity is a bunch of hooey.
    2. I had never seen the circle of 5ths before I was 35 years old, and had never had a page of music theory training until I was 36.
    3. I have voter remorse. Severely.
    4. I sincerely hope there is a second American Revolution, where we can take our country back from the corrupt entities that have usurped it.

    1. I love being up before everyone else in my house. Failing that, I like being up with just my baby daughter – she is such a peaceful soul.
    2. My dad’s entire family is crazy. I was home this weekend with them. It was kinda scary.
    3. Participation awards are harmful. So are varsity letters for music ensembles.
    4. My seven-year anniversary is tomorrow. That is amazing on so many levels.
    5. I think my kids are the (insert superlative here). It may not be the truth, but if I can’t see them that way, how will they learn to?

I loved this list, haha. You krak me up. #5 — definitely! More parents need to take that attitude, IMO. And tell H.A. to take you somewhere nice tonight!

If by “somewhere nice” you mean band practice, where I get to fit uniforms and browbeat new marchers before Sunday’s parade, then H.A. is definitely taking me “somewhere nice”. Ha.

I love lists like this. :P By the way, I saw that one of the Glee characters is Artie Abrams and found it slightly funny. Anyway….
    1) My favorite drink is tomato juice. I wish they would serve it at school.
    2) I am not a fan of long breaks from school. That’s partly why I’m going to be a teacher – school every year for the rest of my working life sounds pretty great.
    3) My best friend and I became best friends because of an imaginary rooster I saw at Dinner Theater.
    4) I have had the same favorite teacher since sixth grade. Since then, nobody has come close to taking the title. (No offense meant to you or any other teachers. )
    5) The site I visit most (besides facebook) is fanfiction.net. There are a good number of well-written stories there.

    Here goes:

    1. I hate reality TV and truly have no understanding of pop culture at all…nor do I care!
    2. I’m appalled by people who know absolutely NOTHING about what is truly going on in a news situation feeling they have the right to BASH those involved in their on-line comments. What do they know about it anyway? Don’t they have anything better to do with their time? We’re living in a world full of lots of hurting people. Say something encouraging, for cripesake.
    3. I hate standardized testing. It’s ruining education and burning out teachers. My kids do exceptionally well every year and I’m proud of them, but can they do math in the real world? Not really.
    4. I have the best kids and grandkids in the world. Yours are great…they really are…but mine are the best! Ya want ta fight about it?
    5. Summer is an absolute sanity requirement for teachers…just saying…

MM! Great to see you comment, my fiend. Another teacher weighs in about standardized testing — and no one in Washington is listening. Who knew?

Well none of you really know me so this could be any 5 things really.

    1. Tardiness makes me INSANE. It is rude and disrespectful

    2. I hate being talked down too. I am no genius but I am no idiot either. Talking down to someone says more about the person doing the talking than the one they are talking too. (Did that even make sense)?

    3. I can say anything I want too about my family members but if you start saying something bad about them, I am NOT going to be a happy camper and it aint gonna be pretty.

    4. I learned the hard way not to judge people so harshly or so quickly. It was a tough lesson to learn but I honestly think it made me a better person. Other people may question the last part of that statement but too bad.

    5. One of my dislikes is people who question my patriotism because we may disagree politically. I just don’t understand that.

Mary, welcome! (Did you know that Suzanne – CALBlond – posts here as well?)

Your #4 is huge for me. There is entirely too little joy in this world, and much of it we control ourselves. It’s a hard lesson to learn (and I’m still learning it), but I’m trying to stamp out the negativity in my world. It’s an ongoing thing for sure!
