All the important news

Cuz that’s why you come to Finkville, right?

So I know I’ve been out of the loop for awhile, but what’s all this about a Footloose remake? Sacrebleu! Sacrilege! [I’m telling you, it’s just a matter of time before Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind are remade, complete with wanton profanity and blatant sex scenes. Mark me.]

Footloose was huge back in my day, released when I was 25 years old. I immediately went out and bought the record. One of the greatest movie soundtracks ever. Besides the fantastic title song, I loved “I’m Free,” “Let’s Hear it For the Boy” (props to a Deniece Williams who could really sing back then), “Almost Paradise,” “Hurts So Good,” “Waiting For a Girl Like You”… a ton of great tunes on one album, by the likes of Kenny Loggins, Ann Wilson, John Cougar (Mellencamp now) and Foreigner. Yall should check it out if you haven’t.

Something tells me that I won’t like the new tunes as much. But that’s just me being old and crusty. Besides, sometimes it does you no good to complain. Just ask the CEO of Spirit Airlines. It’s actually kind of a refreshing take on doing business, and I would be inclined to patronize them when I booked my next flight…if, in fact, I actually booked flights…which I don’t.

Anyway, I’m just waiting patiently for the premiere of season 3 of Mad Men. Oh yeah. I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts, because nothing like this ever does for very long. Jon Hamm and January Jones will launch into big movie roles and MM will be left in the dust. Advancing one’s career…the nerve.

Speaking of which — I won’t have one to advance if I don’t slap leather and head for that line o’ trees…

Squibnocket.

Fink out.

Even though I know I’m not, I can’t help but feel like I’m being baited here, but Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind remakes replete with profanity and sex scenes … both wanton and blatant? Sign me up.

Amber (Mrs. Ross) is the same way you are about Footloose, but I may have bad news for you: Footloose sucks. Is it my California upbringing or is an American town post- say, 1600s Salem Witch era- in which dancing is outlawed to the point that a young male’s chief act of rebellion is through bad dancing … is this not stretching the suspension of disbelief just a bit too far? Playing chicken with tractors, that I buy. Shuffling your feet to incite the Devil, no.

For what it’s worth, the rumored director of the Footloose remake- same guy behind High School Musical, Dirty Dancing, and more- is also the director of the single worst (and therefore the absolute greatest) MTV video ever shot, Billy Squier’s ‘Rock Me Tonight’. It ruined Squier’s career. Instead of let him run around as he does in the video, the director should have put Billy in a corner and rolled tape.

      HAAAA

Ross…one thing’s for sure, mate. You crack me up. Brilliant response! I have absolutely nothing to add (except I’m glad I wasn’t drinking coffee when I read the Billy Squire comment…I was emotionally scarred for weeks after seeing that video).

I don’t know if I ever see them re-making Gone With The Wind, but Wizard of Oz? Absolutely… I say within the next 10 years.

I probably don’t have near the perspective that you have here, but I was disgusted by Footloose. It made little sense and was basically a movie/musical/junk just like Grease. I could do without that era. Gone With The Wind would make more sense with profanity. What would you say if Sherman’s Army was marching towards you with the intent to burn not only your possessions but you? Holy **** probably. Does “The Wiz” count as an Oz remake???? If so, awesome!

Conger! More sacrilege. (Although I will admit there are parts that are so slow, I want to doze.)

LOVED Footloose, too, and Kevin STILL has it after all these years. And I hope no one ever touches my beloved Gone With The Wind — that’s one of my top 5 all favorites along with The Wizard of Oz. NO ONE could do it like Judy!

The big people in Hollywood need to stop doing remakes and start writing their OWN stuff!!!

Amen, Suzy. And since we’re talking about the movie…I never said it was Oscar-worthy or anything. If you read Ross’s comments about it — I totally agree that it tests one’s suspension of disbelief to the absolute breaking point. (Dirty Dancing did that for me.) I just loved the soundtrack!

But what I didn’t tell Ross was that I really identified with Ariel. Being raised strict Baptist where dancing was evil, going to restaurants that served alcohol was a no-no, and movies were taboo unless they were G-rated (and this was in the early seventies!)…I totally get her. So which is sillier? That, or Kevin Bacon saving the town with jiggy? HA

I think there is more of this strict kind of upraising than we care to acknowledge, even in this day and age. But yes, it’s a stretch to think that someone, even Kevin Bacon, could save a town with jiggy LOL

OK, NOW we have a common thread; Amber was raised strict Baptist too. So is that the Footloose contingency? Is it the movie that defines the hopes and dreams of repressed Baptist youth? I would have thought that a narrow target audience but apparently not.

And there you have it, sailor. That’s the ticket! Tell Mrs. Ross I heart her for sticking it out!
